Abstract
Marie Le Masson Le Golft (1749-1826), a writer and naturalist from Normandy, is rarely quoted in biographical dictionaries. This is a sufficient reason to consider her, more than Parisian queens of Salons, to be the true femme des Lumières. Does one really know enough about provincial philosophical cultures actual diffusion in the active sectors of the population during the second half of the 18th century? The intellectual silhouette of this woman from Le Havre can contribute greatly to the history of ideas and of the forms of sensibility during the complex cultural period which stretches from the pre-Revolutionary years to the turn of the century. With this sailor's daughter, we encounter Malebranche, Buffon, Daubenton and abbé Grégoire before losing ourselves in the aesthetic experiences of the turn of the century. In 1810, Marie Le Masson Le Golft still speaks of 'our century of Enlightenment'. However, perhaps because she was a scientist, a draughtswoman, a native of Le Havre and a woman, at the end of her life she appears to reflect the first æsthetic lights of the modern world.
